On the obverse, the 1889 Morgan Silver Dollar showcases George T. Morgan’s celebrated depiction of Lady Liberty. She is presented in left-profile, wearing a Phrygian cap, laurel wreath, and a coronet crown, symbolizing liberty and honor.
The reverse of the 1889 Morgan Dollar features Morgan’s version of the heraldic eagle. This bald eagle, depicted without a national shield, clutches arrows, and an olive branch, symbolizing both the nation’s readiness for war and its desire for peace.
Were it not for the 1921 restart of silver dollar coining in the United States and the one-time issue of Morgan Dollars that year, the 1889 Morgan Dollar would hold the record for the highest mintage in one year at a single mint. The Philadelphia Mint struck 21,726,000 Morgan Dollars in 1899. This record stood until 1921 when the Philadelphia Mint struck 44,690,000 coins during the restart of silver dollar production.
