The 1880s represented one of the highest periods of production for the Morgan Silver Dollar. IN 1888, the coins were struck by the Philadelphia Mint, New Orleans Mint, and the San Francisco Mint. Philadelphia led the charge with 19.183 million coins struck, followed by the 12.15 million coins issued by New Orleans. San Francisco struck just 657,000 coins in 1888.
The obverse of 1888 Morgan Silver Dollars comes with a portrait of Lady Liberty. This design from George T. Morgan was created in 1878 and features the head of Liberty in left-profile relief. She is wearing a Phrygian cap, coronet crown, and a laurel wreath.
On the reverse side of 1888-O Morgan Dollars is a depiction of the heraldic eagle. Also created by Morgan, this visual shows the eagle in front-facing relief with the arrows of war in one talon and the olive branch of peace in the other.
