The Morgan Silver Dollar was introduced by the United States Mint in 1878, designed by George T. Morgan, and struck each year until 1904. The last coin was minted in 1921, making this dollar a significant currency in America through the Reconstruction Era, the Gilded Age, and into the dawn of the 20th century and the Roaring 20s. The Philadelphia Mint once again dominated the production of Morgan Dollars in 1888. Philadelphia struck 19.183 million coins, while New Orleans was relatively close behind with 12.150 million coins. The Carson City Mint was inactive for the third straight year, with San Francisco producing an additional 657,000 coins.
On the obverse side, the 1888 Morgan Dollar Coin features a lovely left-profile relief of Lady Liberty. Morgan is said to have drawn inspiration from Anna Willes Williams for this representation. Liberty is shown wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet crown, encircled by a ring of 13 stars.
The reverse side of the 1888 Morgan Silver Dollar presents a heraldic eagle, depicted without a national shield in Morgan’s design. The eagle is shown in a front-facing relief, wings spread wide, clutching both the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
