The Morgan Silver Dollar is perhaps America’s most iconic silver dollar design. Created in 1878 by George T. Morgan, then a brand-new Assistant Engraver at the US Mint, the images on the Morgan Dollar would remain in use from 1878 to 1904, and again one final time in 1921. Today, 1888 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins in certified condition are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The 1888 issue of Morgan Dollars include circulation and proof strikes by the Philadelphia Mint, as well as additional production by the New Orleans Mint and the San Francisco Mint. The highest volume of coins came from the Philadelphia Mint with 19.183 million coins, but New Orleans was close behind at 12.15 million coins. San Francisco produced just 657,000 coins this year.
All of these 1888 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available in Mint State 64 condition. Coins with this grade possess an average luster with an overall attractive eye appeal. Light, scattered marks are possible, with a few in the prime focal areas. It is also possible for several scattered or one small patch of hairlines to exist.
On the obverse of 1888 Morgan Dollar Coins, you will find a bust of Lady Liberty. This left-profile relief depicts Liberty with a Phrygian cap, coronet crown, and a laurel wreath on her head. The field includes 13 stars to honor the original American Colonies and a date mark.
The reverse side of the 1888 Morgan Silver Dollar features the heraldic eagle. This image shows the American bald eagle in front-facing relief with its talons clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
