In the obverse design of the 1887 Morgan Silver Dollar, the United States Mint features an iconic image of Lady Liberty. Designed in 1878 by George Morgan, this left-profile relief depicts Liberty with a Phrygian cap, coronet crown, and a laurel wreath on her head. The field also includes 13 stars.
For the reverse side of 1887 Morgan Dollar Coins, you will find a version of the heraldic eagle. This front-facing bald eagle is shown with its wings spread to the sides as its talons clutch the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. The eagle is flanked by a wreath of oak and laurel.
The 1887 release of Morgan Silver Dollar Coins included strikes by the Philadelphia Mint, New Orleans Mint, and the San Francisco Mint. Philadelphia struck the largest volume at more than 20 million coins, while San Francisco produced 1.771 million coins. New Orleans was between the two at 11.55 million coins.
