Peripheral toning on the coin shows cool hues of steel-blue and gunmetal that are deeper in color at the rims, while the central fields retain a silver-white coloration.
The obverse of 1886 Morgan Dollar Coins features Lady Liberty in left-profile relief. Her head is adorned with a Phrygian cap, a coronet crown, and a laurel wreath. Surrounding Liberty within the design are 13 stars and the 1886 date mark.
On the reverse of the 1886 Morgan Silver Dollar, George T. Morgan’s design showcases a bald eagle with its wings fully spread. The eagle holds both the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace within its talons, symbolizing strength and peace together.
In the mid-1880s, production of Morgan Dollars at the Philadelphia Mint soared. This was somewhat impacted by the temporary closure of the Carson City Mint. The branch mint was closed from 1886 to 1888, with no Morgan Dollars or other denominations produced by the western branch over the course of this three-year period.
