The 1885 release of Morgan Silver Dollars is notable for its production at four different branch mints, as well as the end of a streak in production involving US Mint branch locations. From the program’s debut in 1878 until 1885, four branch mints struck the coins on an annual basis. After 1885, this would happen just four more times between 1889 and 1904, as well as in 1921. Right now, 1885-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins with certified grades authenticated by the CAC are available at JM Bullion.

The CAC has authenticated the MS65 grade from the PCGS.
In 1885, the US Mint would strike Morgan Dollars at the Philadelphia Mint, New Orleans Mint, Carson City Mint, and the San Francisco Mint. With the Carson City Mint closed from 1886-1888, only three branch mints would strike the coins over the next three years. This ended the consecutive streak of four branch mints striking the coins around the country. This would resume briefly from 1889 to 1893, but the Carson City Mint’s closure in 1893 meant an end to the use of four branch mints.
Lady Liberty is on the obverse of 1885-S Morgan Dollar Coins. This design from George T. Morgan shows the bust of Liberty in left-profile relief. She is wearing a Phrygian cap on her head while a laurel wreath and a coronet crown rest at the top of her head. There are 13 stars on this side of the coin as well.
The heraldic eagle graces the reverse of 1885-S Morgan Silver Dollars. Also created by Morgan, this visual shows a front-facing bald eagle without the US national shield. The eagle has wings spread to each side and clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons.
