The 1885-O Morgan Dollar is a beautiful example of the production quality at the New Orleans Mint in the late 19th century. This particular coin is part of one of the most common issues from the New Orleans Mint in the Morgan Dollar Series, but the number of surviving specimens at the MS67 grade level is remarkably small. Now, an 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar in MS67 condition is available online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
This 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar is in Mint State 67 condition. The obverse features cartwheel luster throughout the background, while the reverse surface is nearly blemish-free with beautiful reflectivity. The periphery of the coin features golden-bronze hues in the toning. Overall, MS67 coins have original luster with three to four minuscule contact marks, one or two of which may be in the primary focal fields.
The obverse side of 1885-O Morgan Dollar Coins carries the work of George T. Morgan, showing Liberty in a left-facing profile. She wears a coronet, Phrygian cap, and a laurel wreath. Around her image are 13 stars, representative of the original colonies, as well as the issue year.
On the reverse of 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollars, the coin features Morgan’s detailed heraldic eagle design. This eagle faces forward with widespread wings and clutches arrows and an olive branch in its talons. Below the eagle, the letter “O” identifies its origin at the New Orleans Mint.
Morgan Silver Dollars were first released in 1878 and were produced through 1904 at four US Mint facilities. The Carson City Mint, in particular, contributed the fewest dates and the lowest overall mintage numbers during this period, making those coins highly collectible among enthusiasts of historical American money. Nevertheless, collectors also seek out significant issues from the New Orleans and San Francisco Mints, which include rare and desirable dates.
