During the first half of the 1880s, the New Orleans Mint was issuing an average of more than 5.5 million Morgan Silver Dollars Each year. While the Philadelphia Mint was still producing the most Morgans each year, the New Orleans Mint was a close second at the time.
Starting in the middle of the decade, production of Morgan Dollars at the New Orleans Mint would increase by 100% on average. Through the second half of the decade, mintage figures averaged nearly 11 million coins annually at the mint, with the peak of production coming in 1888 when 12.150 million coins were struck at the New Orleans Mint.
The obverse of the 1885-O Morgan Dollar features the image of Lady Liberty in left-profile relief. Designed by George T. Morgan, this visual shows Liberty with a Phrygian cap on her head and the laurel wreath and coronet crown in her hair.
On the reverse side of the 1885 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin is the image of the heraldic eagle. The national emblem is shown here in a design that also comes from Morgan. It depicts an eagle in front-facing relief with only the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons.
These 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are in Mint State 65 condition. Coins in this condition showcase attractive, high-quality luster with only a few small, scattered contact marks or two larger marks. One or two small patches of hairlines may also be present.
