The New Orleans Mint produced Morgan Dollars in all years of the coin’s program but two, the debut 1878 issue and the final 1921 issue. This 1885-O Morgan Dollar captures the beauty of 19th-century Morgan Dollars with frosted devices and slight toning around the periphery of the design field. Enhancing its value, this coin also has a green sticker from the Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC). Today, 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollars with an MS66+ certification are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Struck from 1878 to 1904, Morgan Silver Dollars were produced by four distinct branches of the US Mint. The Carson City Mint issued the lowest number of coins and dates during this period, making its releases especially coveted among fans of vintage American coinage. That said, coins from the San Francisco and New Orleans Mints also include significant dates that are well regarded by numismatists.
This 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coin is in Mint State 66+ condition, with the Green CAC sticker authenticating this grade level. Both design elements are crisply struck with sharply defined engravings. The periphery features hues of gold, amber, and soft champagne in the toning, with subtle violet hues in the general background. Within the total population of 9.185 million coins, only 317 specimens earned this MS66+ grade.
Featured on the obverse of the 1885-O Morgan Dollar Coin is George T. Morgan’s portrait of Liberty. This left-profile image displays Liberty with a Phrygian cap, laurel wreath, and coronet crown on her head. The border includes 13 stars alongside the year the coin was minted.
On the reverse side of the 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar is Morgan’s depiction of a heraldic eagle. The eagle appears in frontal relief with outstretched wings, holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, symbols of both conflict and peace. Beneath the eagle design, the “O” mint mark denotes its production in New Orleans.
