The 1885 release of Morgan Dollars featured one of the highest collective mintages in the program’s history. The coins were struck by branch mints in Philadelphia, New Orleans, Carson City, and San Francisco. The Philadelphia Mint struck by the highest volume at more than 17.78 million coins, nearly double the volume of the next closest mint, with Carson City and San Francisco providing nominal additional volume to the release.
On the obverse of the 1885 Morgan Dollar Coin, Lady Liberty is depicted in a striking left-profile relief. Morgan is thought to have used Anna Willes Williams as his model for this design. Liberty is illustrated wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet crown, with a ring of 13 stars in the field.
The reverse of 1885 Morgan Silver Dollars features a heraldic eagle, which in Morgan’s rendition, does not include a national shield. Instead, the eagle is shown in front-facing relief, its wings spread wide, clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
