The 1885-CC Morgan Dollar is a unique piece from the history of this program. It was struck in two batches during the year in the lead up to the mint’s closure in November 1885. This 1885-CC Morgan Dollar retains fully-defined details and earned a Mint State 62 certification from the PCGS. This date at Carson City saw low circulation figures and a limited mintage. Right now, the 1885-CC Morgan Silver Dollar in MS62 condition is available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
This 1885-CC Morgan Silver Dollar is in MS62 condition. This piece is well struck and retains some of its original surface visuals. While some 175,000 coins from this issue survive in Mint State conditions, only 2,520 exist at this grade level, combining a historic piece with numismatic appeal and a lower premium compared to higher Mint State grades from the same year.
The Morgan Silver Dollar series began in 1878 and continued through 1904, with coins produced at four different branch mints. Of those, the Carson City Mint struck the fewest Morgan Dollars and in the smallest quantities, lending them considerable appeal among collectors of classic American coinage. However, important and collectible dates were also issued by the mints in San Francisco and New Orleans.
On the obverse of the 1885-CC Morgan Dollar Coin is the well-known image of Liberty created by George T. Morgan. This profile portrait shows Liberty facing left, adorned with a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet inscribed with “Liberty.” A ring of 13 stars and the mintage year are also present.
The reverse of 1885-CC Morgan Silver Dollars showcases another Morgan design: a heraldic eagle in a front-facing pose, wings fully extended. In its talons, the eagle grips an olive branch and a bundle of arrows. Below the image, the letters “CC” appear to indicate its Carson City Mint origin.
