The United States Mint introduced the Morgan Silver Dollar Series in 1878. The launch of the Morgan Dollar, with new Liberty and bald eagle designs from George T. Morgan, marked the return of silver dollar coining in the United States following a five-year hiatus. The Morgan Dollar was issued annually from 1878 to 1904, with a lone strike in 1921 as the US Mint again resumed silver dollar coining following World War I. Now, 1884-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available in certified condition online at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
On the obverse of 1884-O Morgan Silver Dollars, you will find George T. Morgan’s depiction of Lady Liberty. This left-profile relief showcases Liberty with a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet crown on her head. The field includes 13 stars around the outer edge of the design element.
The reverse side of 1884-O Morgan Dollar Coins comes with another design from Morgan, that of the heraldic eagle. This design shows a small bald eagle in front-facing relief with raised wings. The eagle’s talons clutch the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. The eagle is encircled below by a wreath with the national motto overhead.
George T. Morgan came to the United States from England in 1876, recruited by U.S. Mint Director Henry Linderman specifically to help revitalize American coin designs. Prior to his immigration, Morgan had trained at the prestigious Royal Mint in London under William Wyon, one of England’s most celebrated medallists.
These 1884-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are in Mint State 65 condition. The coins showcase an attractive mint luster for their age, with a few scattered, small contact marks. Two larger marks might also be present, as well as one or two small patches of hairlines.
