In 1884, the United States Mint issued Morgan Dollars at the Philadelphia Mint, Carson City Mint, the New Orleans Mint, and the San Francisco Mint. Philadelphia and New Orleans lead the way in production, striking 14.07 million coins and 9.73 million coins, respectively. The Carson City Mint issued one of its highest volumes in this series with 1.136 million coins, while San Francisco produced another 3.2 million coins.
The obverse side of the 1884 Morgan Dollar Coin features a beautiful left-profile relief of Lady Liberty. Morgan is believed to have used Anna Willes Williams as the muse for this depiction. Liberty wears a Phrygian cap, laurel wreath, and a coronet crown, encircled by 13 stars.
The reverse side of the 1884 Morgan Silver Dollar showcases the heraldic eagle, which does not incorporate a national shield in Morgan’s design. The eagle is shown in front-facing relief, wings spread, clutching both the arrows of war and the olive branch representing peace.
