The United States Mint introduced the Morgan Silver Dollar Series in 1878. Designed by George T. Morgan, these coins featured new depictions of Liberty and the American bald eagle, symbolizing the return of silver dollar production after a five-year pause. The Morgan Dollar was struck each year from 1878 to 1904, with a final issue in 1921 following the end of World War I. Right now, 1884 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available in certified condition from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1884 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin is graded Mint State 65, offering strong mint luster for their age. You may notice a few scattered, minor contact marks, with the possibility of one or two slightly larger marks and small areas of hairlines.
Morgan’s dedication to his craft as an engraver was evident in his work ethic and pursuit of perfection. He frequently lectured on medallic art and mentored younger engravers at the Mint, helping to establish an American school of coin design that would influence numismatic aesthetics well into the 20th century.
The obverse of 1884 Morgan Silver Dollars showcases George T. Morgan’s portrait of Lady Liberty. Depicted in left-profile relief, Liberty wears a Phrygian cap topped with a laurel wreath and coronet crown. Thirteen stars encircle the design along the coin’s edge, representing the original colonies.
On the reverse side of 1884 Morgan Dollar Coins, Morgan’s heraldic eagle design is featured. The eagle is shown with wings spread wide, clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons. A wreath wraps the lower half of the design, while the national motto appears above the eagle.
