The launch of the Morgan Silver Dollar Series in 1878 meant the return of silver dollar coining in the United States. Silver dollars had historically been in circulation and regularly struck by the US Mint since the 18th century, but in 1873 the series came to an end when Congressional legislation ended the free coining of silver in the US and brought a halt to the Seated Liberty Dollar Series. Today, 1884 Morgan Silver Dollars in certified condition are available online at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
In 1884, Morgan Dollars were struck by four different branches of the United States Mint. The Philadelphia Mint and the New Orleans Mint struck the highest volumes at 14.07 million and 9.73 million coins, respectively. With a total mintage of just over 28.1 million Morgan Dollars in 1884, the Philadelphia Mint alone accounted for half of the volume struck and, combined with New Orleans’ production volume, helped produce more than 84% of Morgan Dollars for the year.
All of these 1884 Morgan Silver Dollars are in Mint State 63 condition. Coins with this grade have mint luster that is slightly impaired, as well as numerous small contact marks and scattered heavier marks. Small hairlines may also be visible without magnification.
On the obverse of the 1884 Morgan Dollar Coin, you will find a portrait of Lady Liberty. This left-profile relief shows the head of Liberty with a Phrygian cap on her head, as well as the coronet crown and laurel wreath in her hair.
The reverse side of 1884 Morgan Silver Dollars comes with another design from George T. Morgan. The designer of the obverse and reverse, Morgan featured the heraldic eagle on the reverse of the coins. This visual shows the front-facing bald eagle clutching the arrows of war and olive branch of peace.
