This 1884-CC Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin is an AU58 specimen and boasts the highest grade in the AU range. This particular coin has slight wear patterns on the high points and retains its near-full original mint luster.
In the obverse design of 1884-CC Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coins, James B. Longacre’s portrait of Liberty features in left-profile relief. The design element captures Liberty with long curls down the side of her face and a coronet crown on her head.
For the reverse of 1884-CC $20 Liberty Double Eagles, Longacre’s version of the Great Seal of the United States is found at the center. This design consists of a bald eagle supporting the US national shield as it clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. Rays of sunlight extend from wingtip to wingtip.
The 1884-CC $20 Double Eagle is an example of the Type III visuals used on the reverse of coins in this series. When the Double Eagle debuted in 1850, it lacked the national motto of IN GOD WE TRUST and used a denomination of TWENTY D. In 1866, the Type II revision introduced the national motto inside the circle of stars above the eagle’s head. The Type III revision in 1877 kept the Type II revision while also changing the denomination from TWENTY D to TWENTY DOLLARS.
