In 1884, the Carson City Mint was approaching a break in its production. The mint opened in 1870 and issued coins until 1885, with a break in production from 1886 to 1888. Production would resume in 1889 and continue until the mint’s complete closure after 1893.
The obverse side of the 1884-CC Pre-33 Liberty Gold Eagle Coin features a left-profile bust of Liberty. This design from 1838 depicts Liberty with a coronet crown in her hair and a ring of 13 stars around the field.
On the reverse of 1884-CC $10 Liberty Gold Eagles, you will find the heraldic eagle of the United States. This design was also created in 1838 and it shows the bald eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield on its chest, the arrows of war in one talon, and the olive branch of peace in the other. These coins have the notable addition of IN GOD WE TRUST on a banner above the eagle, a feature that was added to US coins in 1866 following the Civil War.
