In the obverse design of 1883-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles is a portrait of Lady Liberty. Designed by James B. Longacre, this left-profile relief shows Liberty with a coronet crown on her head and a ring of 13 stars around the field. The bottom of the field includes the date of issue.
For the reverse side of 1883 Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coins, the US Mint features the Great Seal of the United States. Also designed by Longacre, this seal includes the bald eagle, US national shield, arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. As a Type III specimen, these coins have the full spelling of the denomination as TWENTY DOLLARS.
In 1883, production would reach a high it would not see for another decade. The Philadelphia, Carson City, and San Francisco Mints all struck Liberty Double Eagles. San Francisco just edged out Philadelphia for the greater volume at 1.189 million coins, compared to 1.125 million coins at Philadelphia. Carson City issued 59,962.
These 1883-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are Extremely Fine specimens. Coins in this condition would range from 40 to 45 on the Sheldon numeric scale and boast light wear on the high points only. Some traces of the mint luster may be present.
