On the obverse side, the 1883-O Morgan Silver Dollar features Lady Liberty in a striking left-profile relief. Morgan reportedly used Anna Willes Williams as the model for Liberty’s image. She is depicted with a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet crown. Surrounding her is a ring of 13 stars.
The reverse side of the 1883-O Morgan Dollar Coin displays the heraldic eagle, which lacks a national shield in Morgan’s interpretation. The eagle is shown in a front-facing position with its wings fully spread. Its talons hold both the arrows of war and the olive branch symbolizing peace.
Morgan Dollars were issued with four circulation versions in 1883, as well as a low volume of proof coins from the Philadelphia Mint. The New Orleans Mint struck 8.725 million coins in 1883, the second highest behind only 12.29 million coins from the Philadelphia Mint. In addition, the San Francisco Mint struck 6.25 million coins and the Carson City Mint issued 1.2 million coins.
