The 1883 Morgan dollars were struck during a period of continued debate over silver policy, as the effects of the Bland-Allison Act continued to flood the market with silver dollars that often went unused in commerce, instead accumulating in bank vaults. Today, 1883-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coins in certified condition are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Morgan Silver Dollar production in 1883 represented a maturing phase in the series, with all four active mints continuing their operations but showing distinct production patterns that fascinate collectors today. The Philadelphia Mint led production with over 12 million coins, while Carson City issued the fewest coins at 1,204,000 pieces.
All 1883-O Morgan Silver Morgan Dollar Coins available here come with Mint State 64 certification and a plastic slab for protection. MS64 coins have average mint luster for their age and several small contact marks in groups. One or two heavy contact marks are also possible, with one or two small patches of hairlines possible. The PL designation stands for proof-like, indicating some presence of frosted devices.
On the obverse of 1883-O Morgan Dollar Coins, you will find a depiction of Lady Liberty. Created by George T. Morgan, this left-profile bust shows Liberty with flowing hair and a Phrygian cap. On her head, you’ll notice both a laurel wreath and a coronet crown.
The reverse side of the 1883-O Morgan Silver Dollar comes with another design from Morgan. Known as the heraldic eagle, this design shows the American bald eagle in front-facing relief with its wings spread. The eagle’s talons clutch the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
