The Morgan Silver Dollar was introduced in 1878 as a replacement for the Seated Liberty Silver Dollar. The latter was the first widely circulated silver dollar in US history, but it was canceled in 1873 when the Congress ended the free coining of silver. In 1878, silver dollar production resumed with a new design from George T. Morgan. Each of the 1883-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coins available here comes to you in NGC plastic slabs with Mint State 65 certifications. Coins with a Mint State 65 grade exhibit attractive mint luster with a few small, scattered contact marks or two larger marks present. One or two small patches of hairlines are also possible.
In total, 1883 Morgan Silver Dollars were struck by four different branch mints. The Philadelphia Mint issued the largest number at 12,290,000 coins in total, with the New Orleans Mint coming in second with a total of 8,725,000 coins.
For the obverse design of the 1883-O Morgan Dollar, the US Mint featured George T. Morgan’s depiction of Lady Liberty. The left-profile relief includes a Phrygian cap on her head with both the coronet crown and the laurel wreath in her hair. The field includes an arch of 13 stars over her head.
In the reverse design of 1883 Morgan Silver Dollars, Morgan’s other design shows the heraldic eagle. This version of the emblem includes a front-facing eagle with its wings spread as it clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons.
