The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most iconic American coins issued for circulation use. Designed by George T. Morgan, this coin debuted in 1878 and was struck annually through 1904. The 1883 issue of the Morgan Dollar included five different versions, with Philadelphia issuing proof and circulation coins, while Carson City, New Orleans, and San Francisco all issued circulation specimens as well. Today, 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins in certified condition are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The Morgan dollar features one of the most iconic depictions of Liberty in American numismatic history—a left-facing profile of a young woman wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with cotton and wheat, symbolizing America’s agricultural heritage. To create this design, Morgan departed from convention by working with a real model—Anna Willess Williams, a Philadelphia schoolteacher and friend of the engraver’s who possessed what Morgan considered the perfect classical profile.
All 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins offered here come in Mint State 65 condition. Coins with this grade have an attractive mint luster with a few small, scattered contact marks and up to two larger marks. One or two small patches of hairlines are also possible on the coins. Philadelphia issued the highest volume of coins in 1883, striking more than 43% of the total production volume for the year.
On the obverse of 1883 Morgan Dollar Coins, you’ll find Morgan’s portrait of Liberty. Morgan’s portrait of Liberty presents a dignified expression, her hair flowing loosely, and creates a distinctively American interpretation that departed from the more stylized European aesthetic that had influenced previous U.S. coinage.
The reverse side of 1883 Morgan Silver Dollars comes with an image of the heraldic eagle. Also designed by Morgan, this emblem features the front-facing bald eagle with raised wings. The eagle is flanked beneath by a wreath, with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons.
