The Carson City Mint, a storied institution of the American West in the 19th century, was built at the peak of a silver boom close to a mine in Nevada, and issued over a hundred gold and silver coins during its years of operation between 1870 and 1893. Among these were the iconic coins known as the Morgan silver dollar, of which a vast hoard eventually accumulated in the vaults of the US Treasury, remaining undisturbed until rediscovered in the 1960s. Managed by the General Services Administration and known as the GSA Hoard of Morgans, some of the most numerous pieces in this supply of some three million coins came with the Carson City mint mark. One such is this 1883-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coin, now available from JM Bullion.

Silver dollars from the GSA Hoard of Morgans transformed the collector’s market starting when they were auctioned in the Seventies and early Eighties. They have appreciated steadily in value in the years since, making them an excellent choice for long-term investment: particularly so for pieces with a certified grade from the Numismatic Guaranty Company, the world’s leading third-party coin grading service. The NGC has graded more than 55 million coins using the standardized Sheldon scale, and its certifications are trusted by dealers around the world.
This 1883-CC Morgan Dollar Coin comes in a protective plastic slab labeled to indicate the certified NGC grade of MS62 or Mint State 62. That means an acceptable quality of eye appeal despite potentially impaired luster and the possible appearance of contact marks and hairline scratches in prime focal areas. The team at JM Bullion tracks and fully insures each shipment against any possible mishaps in transit.
The coin’s obverse side features a profile effigy of Lady Liberty, along with the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1883,” and thirteen decorative stars at the rim to represent each of the Union’s founding states.
Clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, a heraldic eagle appears on the coin’s reverse side. This is accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
