The term Fairmont Collection is applied to a group of Pre-33 US Gold Coins that were discovered in foreign bank vaults in the 21st century and repatriated to the United States in the late 2010s.
These coins originally ended up overseas as a result of international commerce between the United States and its foreign trade partners. The coins are limited in overall number, with just a few hundred believed to actually still be in Mint State conditions after more than 100 years.
The obverse of 1883 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin comes with a depiction of Lady Liberty. Designed in 1849 by James B. Longacre, 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, this left-profile bust was inspired by the image his predecessor, 3rd Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht, created in 1838. The left-profile portrait depicts Liberty with a coronet crown.
On the reverse side of 1883-CC Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin is a depiction of the Great Seal of the United States. Similar to the heraldic eagle, it features a front-facing bald eagle clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. A more ornate design, this also includes a larger US national shield with rays of light extending from wingtip to wingtip and a circle of 13 stars over its head.
These 1883-CC $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are AU50 specimens. Coins with this grade are the lowest on the AU scale, but still possess only extremely light wear on the highest points of the coin and the potential for medium or near-full mint luster.
