The gold used in Pre-33 S-Double Eagles has a direct connection to the California Gold Rush, which began in 1848 with James Marshall’s discovery at Sutter’s Mill. This gives these coins a special historical authenticity. Just four years after the Double Eagle Series was launched, the San Francisco Mint began making significant contributions to the production of the new denomination. Today, 1882-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Most S-Double Eagles were struck using gold from California mines, particularly in the early years. This “local gold” connection means these coins are physical embodiments of the Gold Rush era. Unlike coins from other mints, the S-Double Eagle coins were frequently made from freshly mined gold that went directly from mines to the mint.
All 1882-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins offered here come in plastic flips with Extremely Fine condition. Coins with this condition tend to fall between 40 and 45 on the Sheldon Numeric Scale. XF coins tend to showcase light wear on the higher relief points of the design with some traces of the mint luster remaining. The San Francisco Mint produced the largest volume of Double Eagles in 1882, with 1.125 million coins compared to only 571 coins from Philadelphia and 39,140 from the Carson City Mint.
On the obverse of 1882-S Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagles, you will find James B. Longacre’s portrait of Lady Liberty. This left-profile relief shows Liberty wearing a coronet crown on her head and a ring of 13 stars around the effigy.
The reverse of 1882-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coins comes with the Great Seal of the United States. The design shows the bald eagle with spread wings and the US national shield. The eagle also clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. This Type III reverse was introduced in 1877 and includes both the national motto (added in 1866) and the face value as TWENTY DOLLARS.
