In 1882, four US Mint locations struck $10 Liberty Eagles, with Philadelphia producing the highest number at 2,324,440 coins. San Francisco followed with a smaller batch of 132,000 coins. The New Orleans and Carson City Mints struck the lowest volumes, minting only 10,820 and 6,764 coins respectively.
All of these 1882-O $10 Liberty Gold Eagle Coins are available in Extremely Fine 40 condition, protected within a plastic slab. These coins tend to show light wear over the high points with the possibility for some traces of the mint luster to remain.
The obverse of the 1882-O Liberty Eagle presents a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty designed by Christian Gobrecht. Her hair is styled in an elegant bun, topped with a coronet inscribed with “LIBERTY.” Thirteen stars arch above her, representing the original colonies, while the date appears below her portrait.
The reverse of these 1882-O $10 Liberty Gold Eagle showcases Gobrecht’s heraldic eagle design. The bald eagle faces forward with the US shield on its chest, clutching the olive branch of peace in one talon and arrows symbolizing defense in the other. Type II coins like this feature a banner above the eagle, inscribed with the national motto.
