On March 11, 1878, the first Morgan Dollars were struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Soon dies were sent to mints at San Francisco, Carson City, and New Orleans to help with demand for the nation’s new Silver Dollar. Production ceased in 1904 before continuing briefly in 1921 under a decree of the Pittman Act. The U.S. Mint also offered a commemorative Morgan Dollar in 2021 to celebrate the centennial of its final year of issue.
Upon the obverse of Morgan Silver Dollar Coins, Lady Liberty is featured in left-profile relief. For this design, George T. Morgan enlisted the aid of Anna Williams, a teacher from Philadelphia. Williams sat five times for Morgan until the portrait was perfected. This was part of Morgan’s attempt to present Lady Liberty as an American woman rather than a mythical Greek-inspired character.
For the reverse of 1882 Morgan Silver Dollars an American eagle is shown carrying arrows and an olive branch in its talons. This symbolic imagery represents America’s wars and the peace she strives for. Surrounding the bird are two laurels whose ends are tied with a ribbon. The reverse also bears inscriptions reading “United States of America, In God We Trust, One Dollar.”
