The Carson City Mint was a short-lived branch mint in the US Mint system located in Nevada. The mint operated from 1870-1885 and again briefly from 1889-1893. This 1883-CC Liberty Double Eagle is a beautiful example of Carson City gold coin production, with a combination of both reflective fields and a satin-like luster. Right now, the 1882-CC Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin in AU58 condition is available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
This 1882-CC Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin is in AU58 condition, with minimal wear confined to the highest relief points, as well as well-struck design elements and crisp stars present on the obverse. Overall, the coin boasts rich golden toning with subtle orange-gold highlights on the design elements and lettering.
Liberty Double Eagle coins went through three reverse design types between 1850 and 1907. The Type I series lacked the national motto and used a denomination engraving of TWENTY D. Type I coins were issued from 1850 to 1866. From 1866 to 1876, the Type II design added a banner with the national motto of IN GOD WE TRUST. The Type III design was introduced in 1877 and used through 1907. It retained the addition of the national motto and expanded the denomination engraving to TWENTY DOLLARS.
On the obverse of the 1882-CC Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle, you will see a left-profile image of Lady Liberty. Similar to Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty design used on the Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle, this version—featuring Liberty wearing a coronet crown—was specifically created for the Double Eagle by James B. Longacre.
The reverse of the 1882-CC $20 Liberty Double Eagle presents the Great Seal of the United States. In this image, a bald eagle supports the national shield while holding the arrows of war in one talon and the olive branch of peace in the other. As a Type III reverse, it includes the aforementioned additions for the Type III specimens.
