The Carson City Mint was instituted by Congress in 1863 to strike coins from silver mined at the nearby Comstock Lode. This historic site created a silver rush, with prospectors nationwide partaking in the mining frenzy. But by 1893, the silver had dried up to the point that the mint stopped producing coins. By 1899, it had closed its doors for good.
