The Fairmont Collection is a famous hoard of Pre-33 US Gold Coins. The coins in this hoard were struck by various branches of the United States Mint more than a century ago and spent decades overseas before being repatriated to the US in the late-2010s. Among the denominations heavily represented in the hoard is the $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle. Today, 1882-CC $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available to you online at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Carson City Mint issued its first Liberty Gold Double Eagles in 1870 when it opened for operation. These 1882-CC Double Eagles are a unique issue as this date marks the return of Gold Double Eagle coining at Carson City following a hiatus in production in 1880 and 1881. Part of the hoard of Fairmont Collection coins, these specimens were initially used in international commerce and did not return to the United States until the late-2010s.
All of these 1882-CC $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available with AU58 grades. AU represents a range of numerical grades on the Sheldon Numeric scale between 50 and 58, placing these specimens at the top end of the AU scale. The coins have only trace signs of friction on the highest points and may have medium or near-full luster.
On the obverse of the 1882 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin is a bust of Lady Liberty. Designed in 1849 by James B. Longacre, the portrait shows Liberty in left-profile relief wearing a coronet crown with 13 stars around the portrait.
The reverse side of 1882-CC Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins comes with a depiction of the Great Seal of the United States. A more ornate design of the heraldic eagle, this design was created by Longacre as well. He was the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1844 until his death.
