For the reverse of the 1881-S Morgan Dollar Coin, Morgan created a version of the heraldic eagle. Though it lacks the US national shield, the design retains the customary image of the bald eagle in front-facing relief with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons.
The 1881 release of the Morgan Silver Dollar included several varieties issued, with the Philadelphia Mint the only branch to issue circulation coins and nearly 1,000 proof specimens. Carson City, New Orleans, and San Francisco all contributed to the production of circulation coins in 1881, with San Francisco leading the way among all branch mints in terms of the volume of circulation coins struck.
