The Morgan Silver Dollar is regarded as one of the most iconic silver dollars in the history of the United States. Introduced in 1878, the coin was minted regularly until 1904, then revived in 1921 when silver dollar production resumed after a 17-year suspension. Throughout its run, the US Mint utilized branch facilities in cities such as Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City, and Denver for its production. Today, 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins in certified condition are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
With the 1881 release of Morgan Silver Dollars, the United States Mint struck the coins at four branch mints across the country. The San Francisco Mint issued the largest volume at 12.76 million coins, while Carson City issued the smallest volume at just 296,000 coins. Philadelphia and New Orleans also contributed to production, striking 9.163 million and 5.708 million coins respectively.
All 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins available here are Mint State 64+ specimens. The coins have a slightly above-average mint luster with small contact marks, some of which may be located in the prime focal areas, and small hairlines or small patches. An MS64+ coin is one that is above-average for an MS64 specimen, but not quite to the visual quality level of an MS65.
The obverse of the 1881-S Morgan Dollar Coins features a beautiful rendition of Lady Liberty. Created by George T. Morgan in 1878, this design shows Liberty in left-profile relief, wearing a Phrygian cap, with a laurel wreath and a coronet crown crowning her head. The design is further complemented by a circle of 13 stars encircling her.
On the reverse of the 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollars, you’ll find a distinctive version of the heraldic eagle. Also designed by Morgan, this representation showcases a front-facing bald eagle with its wings outstretched, clutching arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing a balance between conflict and peace.
