Coin Highlights:
In 1876, George T. Morgan, then 30, was hired as the Assistant Engraver at the United States Mint. Previously, Morgan had perfected his craft as a die engraver in England. That same year, he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he began work on a new Silver Dollar design. The design was ultimately approved by mint director Henry Linderman. Following the 1878 Bland-Allison Act, the Morgan Silver Dollar officially went into production.
The obverse of Morgan Silver Dollar Coins contains a Lady Liberty effigy. Morgan’s design showcases Ms. Liberty in left-profile relief. Rather than an imaginary persona, Morgan pictured Liberty as an American woman modeled after a Philadelphia school teacher named Anna Williams.
On the reverse of 1881 Morgan Silver Dollars a bald eagle rendition is found. Also created by Morgan, this design presents America’s national bird with open wings as it carries arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The reverse also bears inscriptions reading “United States of America, In God We Trust, One Dollar.”
