In 1880, the Morgan Silver Dollar Series was still fresh in the minds and hands of Americans. The program was introduced in 1878 and marked the restart of silver dollar coining in the US following a halt in 1873 that ended the Seated Liberty Dollar. Right now, certified 1880-S Morgan Silver Dollars are available for purchase online at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each of the 1880-S Morgan Silver Dollar available here is certified Mint State 63 by the PCGS. Coins in this condition exhibit slightly impaired mint luster, numerous small contact marks, and even a few scattered marks that are heavier. Small hairlines are also possible and will be visible without magnification, if present.
The 1880 release of Morgan Silver Dollars saw five iterations of the coin struck by the United States Mint system. The Philadelphia Mint struck the greatest volume of coins at 12.6 million in total, and even struck a few thousand proof versions of the coin. The Carson City Mint issued the smallest volume of circulation specimens at just 591,000, while the New Orleans Mint contributed an additional 5.3 million coins.
Obverse designs on the 1880-S Morgan Dollar include the left-profile bust of Liberty. This image was created in 1878 by George T. Morgan and depicts Liberty in left-profile relief with a Phrygian cap, laurel wreath, and coronet crown on her head.
Reverse visuals on the 1880 Morgan Silver Dollar feature the heraldic eagle. Also designed by Morgan, this image shows the bald eagle in front-facing relief as it clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
