With the 1880 release, the US Mint struck the coin in large volumes across three of the four branch mints. Philadelphia was the lead mint, issuing 12.6 million coins, while Carson City issued the fewest at 591,000 coins. The New Orleans Mint contributed 5.305 million coins, while these 1880-S Morgan Dollars were part of the 8.9 million coins issued by the San Francisco Mint.
On the obverse of the 1880-S Morgan Dollar Coin, Lady Liberty is portrayed in left-profile relief wearing a Phrygian cap. Designed by George T. Morgan, this image of Liberty is surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies. The design was inspired by Anna Williams, a teacher from Philadelphia.
The reverse side of the 1880-S Morgan Silver Dollar also features a design by George T. Morgan: an American bald eagle. The eagle is depicted with outstretched wings, holding arrows and an olive branch in its talons, with a laurel wreath below.
