As Americans turned in countless Silver Certificates in the 1960s for the silver dollars backing those certificates, the US Treasury eventually discovered that it was holding within its vaults millions of previously uncirculated Morgan Silver Dollars. From this hoard of some $3 million in silver dollars, some 95% of the coins were found to be Morgan Silver Dollars from the Carson City Mint.
The Carson City Mint issued the lowest volume in Morgan Silver Dollars in each of the years that it struck the coins from 1878 to 1885 and 1889 to 1893. The discovery of the Treasury hoards and subsequent public auctioning of those coins to the American public in the 1970s by the Government Services Administration changed the availability of some date marks and mint marks once thought to be rare. For example, in 1880, the Carson City Mint issued just 591,000 coins, the third-lowest mintage from the mint. The GSA audit of the Treasury in the 1960s discovered 131,500 1880-dated coins, a significant portion of the original mintage.
Lady Liberty features on the obverse of all 1880 Morgan Silver Dollars. This image was created by George T. Morgan and depicts Liberty with a coronet and wreath crown in her hair. The left-profile portrait includes a ring of 13 stars in the design.
The heraldic eagle of the United States is on the reverse of 1880-CC Morgan Silver Dollars. Morgan also created this design and it notably lacks the US national shield in the field. The design otherwise features a front-facing bald eagle with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons.
These 1880-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available to purchase with the full original packaging from the GSA. As the GSA prepared the coins for auctions in the 1970s and 1980s, each coin was individually set within a hard plaster holder and presented in a box with a Certificate of Authenticity. This is exactly how your coin will arrive. It should be noted that in the 21st century, it is quite rare to find remaining GSA Morgan Silver Dollars with the full packaging of the holder, box, and COA!
