Early specimens from this series are particularly popular with collectors. This 1880/79-S Morgan Dollar is a unique specimen that showcases an overdate strike on its 1880 date mark. The 1880/79-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coin available here comes in MS67+ condition, indicating it is among the highest-quality specimens at this level. This coin showcases a strong cartwheel luster across both sides that results in an almost proof-like contrast of its frost-like devices and bright, reflective fields. The toning across the specimen is minimal and found largely on the periphery with a subtle hint of champagne-gold and silver-gray hints near the designs.
This particular 1880 Morgan Silver Dollar from the San Francisco Mint is labeled an 1880/79 specimen due to a unique minting issue. Known as 80 over 79, these coins feature an 1880 date mark struck over the previous year’s 1879 date mark. This variety of 1880 Morgan Dollars also occurred at the Philadelphia Mint. As a result of the overdate strike, you can see part of the 7 from the 1879 date in the upper-left of the second 8 in 1880, as well as a portion of the vertical bar in the 7 in the same 8. It is also possible to see part of the 9 from 1879 in the middle and the bottom of the 0 in 1880.
Lady Liberty is found on the obverse of 1880/79-S Morgan Dollar Coins. This image features Liberty in left-profile relief with a Phrygian cap on her head, as well as a coronet crown and laurel wreath. The design field includes 13 stars and the 1880 date mark.
An American bald eagle features in the reverse design of the 1880/79-S Morgan Silver Dollar. Designed by George T. Morgan, who also created the obverse imagery, this image captures a front-facing bald eagle with spread wings and talons that are shown clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
