This beautiful MS66 specimen is an 1880 issue struck with an 1879 die, as represented by the 1880-overdate on the reverse side. Each 1880/79-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coin offered here is an MS66 specimen. The coin features bright, white surfaces with frosted luster. Both sides have clean fields with a vivid cartwheel toning. This coin is an 1880 over 1879 specimen, meaning a die from the 1879 issue was used in the production of these coins, resulting in the slight visual appearance of the 79 beneath the 80.
The year 1880 brought improved economic conditions as the depression fully lifted and industrial production accelerated, yet the debate over silver’s role in the monetary system intensified. Carson City produced 591,000 Morgan dollars, another relatively modest output that reflected the mint’s operational constraints and the still-limited demand for silver coins in commercial channels. Most Morgan dollars were immediately placed in Treasury vaults rather than circulating, as the public preferred paper currency and gold for large transactions.
