The $20 Legal Tender Notes were introduced in Series 1862. These large format notes were also known as United States Notes and featured a version of Lady Liberty. The next four series arrived in 1863, 1869, 1875, and 1880. Each one featured a portrait of Alexander Hamilton, a Founding Father and the nation’s first Secretary of the Treasury. The designs on these three series were fairly consistent with each other, with only slight variations on each. Following the 1880 Series, the $20 denomination was discontinued.
