The San Francisco Mint was one of the most consistent producers of Morgan Silver Dollars. This 1879-S Morgan Dollar is among the earliest specimens in the program, offered in just the second year of availability. This unique vintage coin features a distinctive eye appeal with fields that vividly reflect the light and silver finish of the coin. Both sides showcase sharp, frosted devices against reflective fields. While 9.11 million 1879-S Morgan Dollars were issued, just 248 coins have a grade higher than this one from the NGC. Today, 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollars in MS67 condition are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
First released in 1878, Morgan Silver Dollars were struck during their original production period until 1904 at four different US Mint locations. Among these, the Carson City Mint issued the fewest dates and lowest mintage totals, making its coins especially desirable to those collecting vintage American currency. Yet, key dates from the San Francisco and New Orleans Mints also attract strong collector interest due to their rarity and historical appeal.
This 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar is in Mint State 67 condition with original luster, three or four minuscule contact marks, and only one or two in the primary fields. This classic Morgan Dollar has a sharp, defined date mark with a hint of warmth to the reverse field courtesy of its subtle golden-tan toning around the edges.
The obverse of 1879-S Morgan Dollar Coins features George T. Morgan’s portrait of Lady Liberty. This left-profile design shows Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, laurel wreath, and a coronet crown. Encircling the design are thirteen stars along with the year of issue.
On the coin’s reverse side, the 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar presents the heraldic eagle. Another Morgan creation, this eagle is shown with outstretched wings, facing forward while gripping both an olive branch and a bundle of arrows in its talons. Below the eagle, the “S” mint mark signifies its San Francisco origin.
