The Morgan Silver Dollar, first introduced in 1878, is widely recognized as one of the most popular silver dollar designs in United States history. Named after its designer, George T. Morgan, these coins were minted from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921. Today, 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available for purchase from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
1879 was just the second year of availability for the Morgan Silver Dollar. This year saw production at the Philadelphia Mint, Carson City Mint, New Orleans Mint, and the San Francisco Mint. Philadelphia struck the largest volume of coins, followed by San Francisco, New Orleans, and Carson City in descending order.
All 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins offered here come in Mint State 64 condition. Coins with this grade have average luster for the age and strike. Several small contact marks are possible in groups, with one or two moderate or heavy marks also possible. The coins may also have one or two small patches of hairlines.
On the obverse of the 1879-S Morgan Dollar Coin, Lady Liberty is presented in a left-profile relief, designed by George Morgan in 1878. She wears a Phrygian cap, a coronet crown, and a laurel wreath on her head, with 13 stars surrounding her.
The reverse design of the 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar shows the heraldic eagle in front-facing relief. The bald eagle has its wings spread wide and holds both an olive branch and arrows in its talons, flanked by an oak and laurel wreath.
