In its second year of mintage, the Morgan Silver Dollar saw increased production, with the San Francisco Mint continuing its production volume from the previous year and charting a course that would see it become one of only two facilities to strike the coin every year it was available. Right now, 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available online at JM Bullion.

Each 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coin in this listing is available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The Morgan Silver Dollar debuted in 1878, with coins struck at the Philadelphia, Carson City, and San Francisco Mints. By 1879, the New Orleans Mint resumed production after a lengthy break caused by the Civil War and Reconstruction. Though San Francisco saw a slight drop in mintage that year, striking 9.11 million coins compared to 9.77 million in 1878, the return of New Orleans, producing 2.88 million coins, significantly contributed to the overall increase in Morgan Dollars minted that year.
The obverse of the 1879-S Morgan Dollar Coin displays George T. Morgan’s portrait of Lady Liberty. She is shown in left-profile wearing a Phrygian cap, with a laurel wreath and a coronet crown. This design has become one of the most iconic depictions of Liberty in U.S. coinage history.
On the reverse of the 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar, you’ll find Morgan’s interpretation of the heraldic eagle. This design shows a bald eagle with its wings spread, clutching arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing the nation’s readiness for both war and peace. Unlike many other eagle designs, Morgan’s eagle does not include a national shield.
