The Fairmont Collection represents one of the more unique hoards of historic American coins. The coins in this collection come from the US Eagle denomination and are largely represented by the Half Eagle, Eagle, and Double Eagle denominations. Fairmont Collection coins were widely used in overseas trade between the US and other nations, eventually coming to rest in bank vaults overseas for decades. Today, 1879-S $10 Liberty Gold Eagle Coins in certified condition are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The coins in the hoard known as the Fairmont Collection were used in international commerce between the US and other countries in the 19th and early-20th centuries. The coins eventually sat in bank vaults overseas for decades before being rediscovered and repatriated to the United States. These specimens became exceptionally popular with collectors once they emerged in the late-2010s.
All 1879-S $10 Liberty Gold Eagle Coins are available in About Uncirculated 50 condition. AU coins typically showcase extremely light or even just trace signs of friction on the highest relief points of the coin. It is also possible for AU50 coins to showcase medium to near-full mint luster.
On the obverse of 1879-S Liberty Eagle Coins, you will find a depiction of Lady Liberty. This left-profile bust shows Liberty with her hair in a tight bun and a coronet crown on her head. The design element also includes an arch of 13 stars over her head with the date mark along the bottom of the design field.
The reverse of the 1879-S $10 Liberty Gold Eagle is an image of the heraldic eagle. This design features a bald eagle in front-facing relief as it looks to the left of the coin field. The eagle supports the US national shield while its talons clutch the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. These Type II specimens bear an added design element introduced in 1866. This side includes a banner with the national motto.
