Introduced by the United States Mint in 1850, the Double Eagle was the largest denomination of gold coin ever struck for circulation in the United States. Each Double Eagle coin features .9675 Troy oz of 90% gold content, with the remaining balance of the metal made up of 10% copper. These popular coins were struck through 1907 with the Liberty Head design. Right now, 1878-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available in certified condition from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1878-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin offered here comes in a PCGS plastic slab. The coins have an About Uncirculated (AU) 58 grade, indicating the presence of only trace friction on the highest relief points of the coin. Each coin will display medium or even near-full mint luster.
The Gold Double Eagle Coin was introduced by the US Mint in the aftermath of the California Gold Rush. The expansion of the existing US Eagle denominations, with its $10, $5, and $2.50 denominations, gave the US an ideal gold coin for use in commerce and international trade. The Double Eagle would be struck by the US Mint as the Liberty Head Eagle from 1850 to 1907 and as the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933 when the series concluded.
Obverse design elements on 1878-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles include a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. Designed by James B. Longacre, this image shows Liberty’s head with flowing hair in a bun and a coronet crown on her head. The field includes a ring of 13 stars with the date mark at the bottom.
Reverse visuals on 1878-S Pre-33 Gold Double Eagle Coins include the Great Seal of the United States. Longacre’s design for the reverse would go through three iterations between 1850 and 1907, with these 1878 specimens only the second to feature the Type III design. With the Type III release, the US Mint changed the denomination from TWENTY D. to TWENTY DOLLARS.
