The $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin was the largest denomination of gold coin ever struck by the United States Mint. Designed in 1849 by James B. Longacre, the coin was introduced into circulation in 1850 and was an immediate hit with the public. Generally speaking, the Double Eagle was largely used in bank-to-bank transactions and between merchants, both inside and outside the United States. Today, 1878-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available at JM Bullion.

The Carson City Mint contributed an additional 13,180 coins.
