The obverse of the 1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar features George T. Morgan’s iconic image of Liberty. She is shown in left-profile relief, wearing a Phrygian cap topped with a coronet crown and adorned with a laurel wreath. Surrounding her portrait are 13 stars representing the original American colonies.
On the reverse of 1878-S Morgan Dollar Coins, Morgan’s heraldic eagle design presents an American bald eagle with wings spread. The eagle clutches arrows in one talon to symbolize defense and an olive branch in the other to signify peace.
The Morgan Silver Dollar was introduced in 1878 following the passage of the Bland-Allison Act, which required the U.S. Treasury to purchase large amounts of silver and mint it into coins. The Morgan Dollar became one of the most iconic and collectible American coins, minted until 1904 and briefly again in 1921, representing a significant period in American numismatic history.
These 1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available in Mint State 64 condition according to the NGC. Coins in this condition have quite attractive eye appeal overall, with average mint luster and several small contact marks in groups. One or two heavier marks may also be present on the coin, with a few marks possible within the primary focal fields.
