Passage of the Bland-Allison Act in 1878 paved the way for the return of US silver dollars to active production and circulation. After a five-year hiatus in production, the silver dollar returned with a new design from George T. Morgan. Known to this day as the Morgan Silver Dollar, this coin was struck for 28 years in total and was produced by five different branch mints. Today, 1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available in certified condition from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
When the United States Mint introduced the Morgan Silver Dollar in 1878, three branch mints were operational and capable of producing the coins across the country. These mint locations included the Philadelphia Mint on the East Coast, the Carson City Mint in the American West, and the San Francisco Mint on the West Coast.
All of these 1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available to you in Mint State 63 condition. Coins with this grade have slightly impaired mint luster with clusters of small contact marks, a few heavier marks, and small patches of hairlines visible without the aid of magnification.
On the obverse of 1878-S Morgan Dollars is a bust of Lady Liberty created by George T. Morgan. This design captures the head of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap. Also included on her head are the coronet crown and a laurel wreath.
The reverse side of the 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar comes with a depiction of the heraldic eagle. A departure from common 19th-century designs, this front-facing bald eagle lacks the US national shield. It does, however, include the spread wings of the eagle with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
