The Carson City Mint, located in Carson City, Nevada, operated as a branch of the United States Mint from 1870 to 1893. It holds the distinction of being the smallest and shortest-lived branch mint in U.S. Mint history. Despite its relatively short operation, the Carson City Mint produced a significant amount of silver and gold coins during its existence.
As it relates to Morgan Silver Dollars, the Carson City Mint issued the coins consecutively from 1878 to 1885 before undergoing a three-year hiatus between 1886 and 1888. In 1889, Morgan Dollar production resumed and continued until the mint’s closure in 1893.
Lady Liberty is on the obverse of all 1878-CC Morgan Dollars. This design from George T. Morgan features the left-profile bust of Liberty with a coronet crown and a laurel wreath crown on her head.
The heraldic eagle of the United States is on the reverse of 1878 Morgan Silver Dollars. This design is also from Morgan and shows the bald eagle clutching the arrows of war and olive branch of peace. Notably, this is one of the few designs in American history to lack the US national shield.
