The United States Mint had regularly issued silver dollars from 1836 to 1873. The Coinage Act of 1873 resulted in the end of free silver coining in the country and, as a result, production of the popular Seated Liberty Dollar. In 1878, the US Mint resumed coining silver dollars with the release of the new Morgan Silver Dollar. Struck by three mints each year, the Carson City Mint issues were regularly the lowest minted. Right now, 1878-CC Morgan Silver Dollars are available to purchase online from JM Bullion with GSA holders.
Coin Highlights:
Each of the 1878-CC Morgan Silver Dollars available here was discovered in the vaults of the US Treasury in the 1960s and first issued to the public through auctions in the 1970s and the early 1980s. The Government Services Administration handled the auctions and originally packaged the hoard of Morgan Silver Dollars from Carson City inside a plastic holder with a box and a Certificate of Authenticity available. That is how you’ll receive these rare 1878-CC Morgan Silver Dollars.
When the Carson City Mint struck 1878 Morgan Silver Dollars, it was responsible for a total production of just 2.212 million coins. Many of the original Carson City-issued Morgans were made from silver pulled from the surrounding silver mines in Nevada and most never even saw circulation. The hoard of Morgans found in US Treasury vaults and dispersed via auction by the GSA were uncirculated coins. A total of just 61,000 1878-CC Morgans were in that hoard of coins.
Buying an 1878-CC Morgan Silver Dollar with the complete original packaging from the GSA is rare. Many early buyers in the auctions later discarded the boxes and COAs after having the coins graded. This is a unique opportunity for any silver dollar fan!
The obverse of 1878 Morgan Silver Dollars features a left-profile bust of Liberty. Designed by George T. Morgan, it comes with coronet and wreath crowns upon Liberty’s head and a ring of 13 stars around her image.
On the reverse of the 1878-CC Morgan Silver Dollar is a depiction of the heraldic eagle. Also created by Morgan, this design is similar to other iterations of the heraldic eagle with one exception: no US national shield is featured.
